Disaffected interview

  1. Hey! First of all, for those who have missed your band before: What does Disaffected is all about?

Hello! We are Disaffected. A Death Prog. band from Portugal. We started way back in the early 1990´s, as a more thrash sounding band. In 1995 we released “Vast” through the Portuguese label “Skyfall Records”. In spite airtime on MTV, VIVA and all other emerging music channels back then, the album never got across – probably due to the fact that being from Portugal we never had a good chance to promote the record. A few years later, the band split. However pressure to regroup was intense. Specially thanks to the internet, that finally helped a greater audience discover the CD and really enjoy it (97% on metal archives, for example). So, in 2012 we released “Rebirth”, that also got amazing critics (99% on metal archives). A few line-up changes and we are back with our third CD: “The Trinity Threshold”. Hands-down our best record so far. So… do the math! Haha.

  1. What can you tell me about Disaffected latest album “The Trinity Threshold”?

We feel it is easily our best record so far. It is still very prog., but a bit more direct and listener friendly than the past 2 CDs. Being structurally less complicated than “Vast” and “Rebirth” makes it stronger and heavier. There is still a lot going on (various layers of riffs, epic keyboards, tons of different sounding voices and ever changing drum tempos), but all packed in a more melodic fashion.

  1. When your fans can hear something new after “The Trinity Threshold”? I mean if there is scheduled some info about new album.

Our fans can check out a few songs on youtube or the whole record on bandcamp. You can also buy the full album (with the lyrics and amazing artwork from Pedro Lordigan) on our official Bandcamp: https://disaffectedmetal.bandcamp.com/.

  1. Do you have enough of positive feedbacks about the album so far?

The album was only released a month ago so reviews are only now starting to be written. But, so far, so good! All the reviews until this date have been very good. We really do appreciate the positive feedback!

  1. Chaosphere Recordings released your album, so how you can value your collaboration, will you continue with Chaosphere Recordings?

We have been friends with Chaosphere´s CEO for more than 25 years! He has been one of our fans from day one. So, after our contract with Massacre Records from Germany ended we thought it would be a great idea to enter the Chaosphere rooster and get across by a very professional company that at the same time also really likes our music. We had several other options, but Chaosphere was simply the best one. Our contract has barely started, but it would be great to continue with this label. After a few more months we will have to sit down and decide upon the future.

  1. You’ve been active as a band for more than 25 years, what helps you to continue with the music?

We are not in this music for the money. We just play what we love and love what we play. We all have other jobs to pay our bills and then just relax and have fun with the music. That is what it is all about. That is what helps us continue. Hopefully for another 25 years!

  1. Is it enough easy to play metal and have stable line-up in your part of Portugal? Can you live from album sales?

We have had our share of difficulties regarding our line up. But in 25 years of being active that is normal and acceptable. No, we cannot just live from album sales, concerts and merchandise. We all have others jobs to help pay the bills. Music is our passion. Not our business. We are as professional as we can possibly be, but we must have other occupations.

  1. Quite a few people have been involved in Disaffected since its inception. How did you come to find a stable, permanent line-up of members?

Since we have been around since the early 1990´s we are pretty well known in our scene and have come to meet a lot of great musicians. So, when we lost our past members, we knew exactly who to contact. Fortunately, all the people we invited to join accepted straight away. Already knowing the person has helped to create the necessary chemistry to be a band.

  1. Which song off of “The Trinity Threshold” would you choose to play if you wanted to create a new fan of Disaffected?

Ouch! That’s a hard question! We think the whole album is really very good. So, any song should cause an immediate positive impact! Haha! Each one of us has his/her favorite track (for example, Gião with “Waters Of Saleph”, Filipa with “Pi Alpha Centurian” or Octávio with “Portico”). But for a newcomer, the best way to star is probably the first two tracks of the record: “Waters of Saleph” and “Glossolalia”.

  1. Which was the band that made you go, “that’s it–I’m starting a metal band!”?

Too many to mention! We all have very different music tastes and influences. Also we all have different ages, which also means picking up metal from different ages. It does make a great difference. As a band, and starting back 25 years ago, all the classics from back then were very important. Bands like early Death, Obituary or Sepultura.

  1. Any parting words for the readers of Metal Militia?

Thank you very much for reading this interview and checking us out. Please let us know what you thought of this new album. We always love getting to read the feedback. It helps us get better and grow. We wish an excellent 2018 and much, much metal!
