The Maya Secret interview

Hey! First of all, for those who have missed your band before: What does The Maya Secret is all about?

Hi there! We started back in the days playing neoclassical / trip-hop kinda atmospheric music. The sound has changed through the years, now it’s more indie-rock / pop oriented stuff, but still pretty atmospheric and “dreamy”.

What can you tell me about The Maya Secret latest stuff “Dreams Will Take You Along”?

This is a single for upcoming album we’re working on. It’s kind of an experiment for us. We are trying new sounds, new gear, even a new approach to make songs. The music is also different. We’ve never wrote anything like that. “DWTYA” is a dance track. So it has a strong influence of house music. Otherwise it’s kind of a dream-pop with nice and simple lyrics about following your dreams.

When your fans can hear something new after “Dreams Will Take You Along”? I mean if there is scheduled some info about the new album.

We are planning to release another single very soon. It is called “Gone” and it will be completely different from “DWTYA”. It’s too early to talk about release of an album; we’re still working on it. But it’s definitely going to be released next year. If everything goes well, of course.

Do you have enough of positive feedbacks about the album so far?

We’ve released just a single at the moment. Some people may be confused by the sound of it, but I think most of them are pretty excited about the new stuff.

What helps you to continue with the music?

It’s quite a complicated question. I think the simplest answer is passion. We all love to play. That’s all.

Is it enough easy to play music and have a stable line-up in your part of Russia? Can you live from album sales?

We live in the European part of Russia, near St. Petersburg – pretty big city with a huge musical background. So it’s easy to find musicians to play with, unlike in some other parts of the country. Speaking about money, we can’t live only from making music. Most of the people in Russia still don’t want to support young artist financially buying their albums, merch and etc.

Quite a few people have been involved in The Maya Secret since its inception. How did you come to find a stable, permanent line-up of members?

People come and go, and it’s okay. Now we have a good and tight crew. We love to make music, learn new things and grow together.

Which song off of your entire discography would you choose to play if you wanted to create a new fan of The Maya Secret?

I think it would be the song called “Darkness”. One of the best songs we ever wrote. Wherever we play, people always like it. By the way, we plan to re-write this track soon. So stay tuned.

Which was the band that made you go, “that’s it–I’m starting a rock band!”?

Oh, it was a long time ago… I think it was some of the mid 90-s or early 2000-s rock-band. Someone really huge.

Any parting words for the readers of Metal Militia?
